Traffic Engineer and Design Engineer

Design Engineer

Develop plans for transportation, commercial/residential building projects, Parking lot design, Drainage design, Stormwater management calculations and report, and Final Site Compliance plans according to Ohio's construction policy and City of Columbus policy. Prepare designs, specifications, and estimates for the projects. Analyze traffic flow data and plan modifications of existing or proposed building new streets, roads, highways, and freeways to improve traffic flow. Perform engineering duties in planning, designing, analyzing, and supervising roads, bridges, building structures, and facilities construction. Perform engineering design tasks for roadway and transportation projects from preliminary to final design. Roadway plans production using Micro Station CONNECT Edition, Open Roads 2023. Develop final design plans, including highway geometrics, cross sections, maintenance of traffic, erosion control, drainage, pavement marking, and signing plans. Assist in specifications, cost estimates, and preparing final PS&E packages. Hydraulic analysis and modeling for bridge projects using HEC-RAS, HydroCad, and HY-8 software. Base mapping for roadway and survey projects. Processing using raw survey data with Trimble Business Center software and preparing submittals using Open Roads Designer. Assist the survey crew with importing and exporting data from Trimble robot. Basemaps development and right-of-way plans in Open Roads and AutoCAD. Right of way research and plan production. Site visits with survey crew at times.

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Construction Management
  • Civil Engineering Management or Structural Engineering.

Traffic Engineer

Established in 2016, BG Engineering Group, LLC (BG) is an emerging engineering firm specializing in transportation design. Our focus is bridge and highway design for agencies such as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), various Ohio counties, and local agencies. BG staff members are unique, having technical experience in multiple engineering disciplines. BG is a certified DBE and SBE with ODOT. Our current ODOT prequalifications include Non-Complex and Complex Roadway Design, Level 1 and Level 2 Bridge Design, Level 1 Bridge Inspection, Safety Study, Limited Right of Way, Limited and Complex Lighting.

We are searching for a Traffic Engineer for our northwest Columbus (Dublin) office.


In this role, the Traffic Engineer will perform the routine aspects of traffic engineering assignments; subsequently providing familiarity with the programs, staff, and operating procedures of the company.

Essential Functions:

  • Traffic analysis using Synchro, Sidra, Vissim, HCS, SimTraffic
  • Experience in the design and/or timing of traffic signals and design of signing and marking, and roadway lighting.
  • Multimodal planning and design
  • Working knowledge of Adobe suite (InDesign/Illustrator) and GIS
  • Experience with AutoCAD and MicroStation
  • Experience working on ODOT, or other state DOT Projects

Perform signal operation projects including the following:

  • Clearance interval calculation
  • Signal timing optimization
  • Active traffic management
  • Timing database entry

Familiarity with traffic signal software and systems including:

  • Understanding and familiarity with ODOT Design Guidelines and Standards
  • Coordinating project assignments with those of other Engineers and Technicians
  • Attending client meetings and providing project status updates.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering is required
  • Active PE license is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in traffic signal operations and retiming
  • A strong understanding of traffic flow theory
  • Experience with designing traffic control devices
  • Strong familiarity with OMUTCD, AASHTO, NACTO, and ODOT design standards
  • Very strong writing (plans and technical documents) and communication skills
  • Experience utilizing state of the practice transportation analysis software platforms
  • Desire to lead a wide range or project types and excel into project and client management as a result of your initiative and motivation to grow.
